It's standard procedure everyone pleads not guilty at their arrangements. 99% of judges won't even allow defendants to plead guilty at arraignments because if due process isn't done correctly then it guarantees they'll get off scott free on an appeal through huge loopholes. I share your frustration this whole thing is one huge sad mess and why they weren't charged under the hate crime ordinance is a sad tell as to how this will probably play out.
