The Ethiopian Airline crew successfully engaged the cut-off switches to prevent the MCAS from shifting the horizontal stabiliser. When they subsequently attempted to manually trim the aircraft, the pilots discovered that the manual trim was not working, so the aircraft was still pointing it's nose down. It's still not clear if, at that point, they decided to reactivate the MCAS, or if it reengaged automatically.

@davidwright5782 Again, the Ethiopian Airline crew successfully disengaged the MCAS. That had been already estabilished. And sensors fails on US, CAN, EU aircrafts continuosly. First than the two crashes, western pilots filed several reports about their 737-MAX suddenly pointing their nose down and not knowing what was happening, and several complained to have been requested to pilot the 737-Max without having received any additional training at all.
