In the early days of semiauto handguns, several models with the main spring ABOVE the barrel had been made (see the Frommer Stop, or the Steyr-Pieper). They really had never become winners, partly because the manufacturing accuracy of the time was what it was, so the more complicate ejection through a small window on the side made those weapons less reliable.
