  1.  @Danilium  It's because he fought for France in 1870, after the fall of Napoleon III and the declaration of the Third Republic, obtaining at Dijon one of the few French victories in the Franco-Prussian war. Rallying his volunteers in Genoa he stated "Yesterday I said to you: war to the death to Bonaparte. Today I say to you: rescue the French Republic by every means." It had been his last campaign.

  2. Ironically, after the fall of Napoleon III and the declaration of the III Republic, Garibaldi fought for France against Prussia in that war. Always on the receiving end.
