it's easy to persuade someone of what he wants to be persuaded. There had NEVER been a "into the single market but without freedom of movement (of EU citizens into UK)" option, and the EU had ALWAYS been adamant about that. Single market comes with ALL the four freedoms. "We must stop Johnny Foreigner from coming here" and "only a fool would leave single market" were mutually exclusive. To make rejoining impossible is the fact that British attitude towards EU and EU partners is not going to change, and you can't leave in someone that's not in good faith.
