  3. Leather is more a cheap byproduct. Untanned hide costs less than meat by weight, and much of the hides are not processed because demand is lower than the available material. What you pay in leather is more the tanning process than the raw material.

  6. There are tons of different alternatives to leather of much different quality. IE "Lorica" exists since the '80s. It withstood the test of time, it's breatheble, more durable than real leather, and resistant to any kind of chemicals. That's why it became a favourite of safety shoes and high-end motorcycle boots manufacturers.
