It's not that hard to imagine there are creatures so minuscule to be invisible to the eyes. There are creatures so minuscule that they are barely visible. There are creatures so minuscule to be visible only to people that have a particularly good sight. There can very well be creatures so minuscule to not be visible even to them.

@nostalji93 Mites? Fairyflies? The ability of focusing close objects is not evenly distributed, nor is visual acuity.

@nostalji93 We are talking of Roman times. No glasses then. and glasses only helps with focus, not visual acuity. It was common knowledge then, IE, that there were stars so faint that only people with exceptional eyesight could see them. To be able to discern Mizar from Alcor for example (a naked eye double star in the Ursa Mayor) was an ancient sight test. Kikiki, a kind of Fairyfly, is 0.15mm, mites can be 0.1mm long. Good luck in seeing them.

@nostalji93 They didn't exclude non living things. Infact the explanation of the "bad air" was still there. But mind that, at that time, known poisons were almost all of biological origin. So, if the effects of a disease were similar to that of a poisoning, it was natural to search for a biological cause to it.

How much modern science is common knowledge? So we don't know about quantum mechanics, because most of people has no idea on how it works?

@johnathanera5863 What he's saying is that a population doesn't know something if it's not common knowledge. So we don't know how to build a ship, or a suspension bridge, because it's not common knowledge.
