@edi9892 The most famous example is ancient Greek. They had two separate words for light and dark blue (glaukos and kuáneos), but the same words meant light and dark green and light and dark grey. Infact, over the centuries there had been a lot of debate over what was the real colour of the eyes of the Goddess Athena (glaukiao or glaukopis)

Alex Evans The Romans considered their scuti to be derived by the Samnites' ones. Semi-rectangular/oval shields were diffused among several Italic populations.

@edi9892 In Italian "blu" is dark blue, "azzurro" is middle blue and "celeste" is light blue.

There's a reason traditions begin, but then they keep on only because "it's the tradition". In a culture where warriors were supposed to paint themsenf before going into battle, I can easily see someone not doing that being mocked even by his enemies, for having shown on the battlefield without being properly dressed for it "Go pict yourself! and don't even think to go back here without being blue!"

Cicero surely used "caeruleum" for blue and "viridi" for green, so they had been distinguished before first century BC.
