The reality is that this kind of things are condescending. It's not like anyone at Netflix believes that 'documentary'. What they really meant by doing this is: "facts are too hard for these people to face. Let's pack this load of bullshit for them, call this a 'documentary', and they'll be happy with that." The "documentary" should have been titled: "Queen cleopatra" "a load of bullshit we packed to make you feel better".

@jonyhyder6506 "probably" in what sense? it's "we have to invent a romance to infer she was not Greek". Because in all probability, her mother was Cleopatra V, a purebreed Greek. If, for whatever reason, we want to invent that Cleopatra V was unable to bear another child after Berenice IV AND, for whatever reason, Ptolemy XII wanted some other heir without marrying another woman, THEN he would have surely chosen a Greek (there were tons in Alexandria), because their Greek ancestry was IMPORTANT for them. An Hellenistic ruler WAS a successor of Alexander, and so he HAD to be a Greek. Better a Macedon.

@josephsadipe The Cleopatra in question was the VII, and all of her ancestors were Greeks from Macedonia (descendants of Ptolemy I, General of Alexander). Mostly of the same family, that was heavily inbreed. Hellenistic rulers derived their legitimacy from being successors of Alexander, so they had to be Greek, better if Macedons. They were so fascinated with African Culture that Cleopatra VII was the first Ptolemaic ruler, after 250 years of rule over Egypt, that bothered to learn Egyptian language.

Are those depictions called "documentary"? Those in the churches are ARTISTIC IMPRESSIONS and can be, and are, of ANY race.

Cleopatra was not of Egyptian descent. She was Greek. all of her ancestors were Greeks. Egypt being in Africa doesn't mean Egyptians were black. There's a variety of populations in Africa. Apart for the 25th dinasty, who were Kushite, and depicted themself as black, Egyptians didn't consider themself black. There is a stark contrast, in Egyptian depictions, between Egyptians and Nubians (the latter having dark/black skin and black physical charateristics). A difference that there isn't between Egyptians and European-Semitic (that are depicted as Egyptians with a different hat).

@knowthyselfinstitute That's not the tomb of Princess Arsinoe. It's a VERY stretched interpretation since there are no inscriptions and, given the circumstances of her death, there was no reason for her to have a mausoleum at all. The age of the body at death does not correspond with that of Princess Arsinoe. There had been no "genetic work" on the remains. The DNA is not analyzable, the head is missing, and craniometry to determine race is a scam even when it's not based on old pictures.

Cleopatra was not a title, it was a personal name. Simply, in that family, all the males were named "Ptolemy" (like Ptolemy I, general of Alexander, the founder of the dinasty) and the females were named Cleopatra (like the wife of Ptolemy V) Berenice (like the wife of Ptolemy I) or Arsinoe (like the mother of Ptolemy I). Cleopatra VII reigned after her sister, Berenice IV, and had another older sister, Arsinoe IV, that died at young age.

ALL of Cleopatra ancestors, maternal and paternal, up to Ptolemy I, founder of the dinasty, were not only Greek, but Macedons. Mostly of the same, inbred, family. We KNOW her entire family tree. Had ALL ot your ancestors been Chinese, not only your grandmother, it wouldn't have counted where you were born, you would have looked 100% Chinese.

Not that much, at least for mediterranean Egyptians (Egypt is quite long) and Cleopatra wasn't of Egyptian descent anyway. The last Egyptian rulers of Egypt had been those of the XXX Dinasty, overthrown by the Persian invasion in 343 BC.

An advantage of much of history being lost, is that you can invent. The Nibelungenlied is the mithical transposition of the story of the destruction of the Burgundians at the hand of Huns of Etzel. That wouldn't have been possible, had there been written cronicles of the fact. So, there's a lot of African fantasy to write.
