  3. Generally the condemned was tied to a seat, while his head was tied to the bent branch of a tree. That way, the moment the head was severed, the tree catapulted it away.

  4. Actually shells provided the first wounds that couldn't really be treated. That led to the ban of explosive rifle bullets, because it was deemed that (contrary than with artillery) the tactical gain was too small compared to the suffering inflicted to the wounded soldiers.
