The pilum couldn't have passed throug the breastplate of the samurai armor, but the rest of the armor was full of openings. Hitting a leg (not to say of the face) the samurai would surely have been incapacitated.

@kur0sh1 To me It's improbable for the point of the pilum to penetrate the iron-steel breastplate of a samurai armor. It was made to penetrate wooden shields. It's true however that legionaries knew their weapons. Seeing the enemy without shield, but with a robust breastplate, a legionary would have probably aimed for the legs, where the javelin could be an indrance and making his opponent to fall even not penetrating at all. Moreover, the legionary generally had two pila, so two chances.
