I'd say that, if you are armed with big, round, shields, and are attacked a numerically superior opposition, to stay close and interlock the shields, hoping to wear the enemies down before counterattacking is simply natural. What else should you do? Vikings were trained infantry (in an era when trained infantry was not so common), it's credible they knowing how to rapidly resort to that formation and mantain it.
