@DonVigaDeFierro "Or how tiny Macedonia took on the Achaemenid empire." It's because there was Alexandria leading them. The funny thing is that really Macedonia rised form a backward kingdom to an empire in the span of a generation, but she doesn't contest that. Rome took centuries to become a respectable city among it's own neighbours, then other centuries to gain a preminence in Italy and then other centuries to become an Empire.

There's worse. There are academics, not historians or archaeologists, but with academic degrees in other fields neverthless, that argue IE, that history begun in the 9th century, and all the "ancient history" happened in reality in few centuries during the middle age (Anatoly Fomenko, matematician). Or that nothing happened between 230AD and 930AD. The Roman Empire ended with the third century crisis, and the 700 years between those two dates had been invented (Gunnar Heinsohn, sociologist).
