Other than complete adaptations, also representations of the original material get a sort of free pass. It's obvious that Shakespeare's Julius Caesar played in a theatre of Kinshasa will likely have a black cast, that the Turandot represented in Europe will probably have an European princess Turandot, or that the Madame Butterfly played in Japan will have a Japanese Captain Pinkerton.

@brucetucker4847 He's not questioning the history and legacy of racism in the US, but historical accuracy in characters' representation. Also, a US black citizen can be lectured about history of racism in the US by a Scandinavian if he gets it wrong. Being born somewere, or with some skin colour, doesn't give anyone any special right to be right. What someone personally witnessed is a thing. History is another thing.

"black people have less choices so let them have their characters" Like if a redhead decides to cosplay as Nessa, she prevents a black girl to do the same.

There's plenty of American archaeologists and historians specialised in Roman period, like of Italian Egyptologists, and they, obviously, lecture. A US citizen can be lectured about US history by a Moroccan if he get it wrong. Being born somewere doesn't give anyone any special right to be right. Also, when Americans or British make a fiction set in Egypt or Greece, it's not THEIR country, it's not THEIR history.

Has Shakespeare wrote Othello for a black actor? No. Has Verdi wrote Aida for a black actress? No. Has puccini created Turandot for a Chinese actress' No. Has classic ballet being created for exclusively white dancers? No. Fine arts belong to their time. Talking of "appropriateness" based on modern time sensibility is narrow mindness. Fidia was a great sculptor. He owning slaves is inconsequential.

Kurosawa's "Ran" (King Lear in a Japanese setting) is a GREAT movie. Nothing wrong in using the basic story and change the setting, because the story was about humans. Other than complete adaptations, also representations of the original material get a sort of free pass.
