The diffusion of impact weapons. Hinged cheek plates offers a good protection vs. swords, spears, javelins and arrows, but not so much vs. axes and maces, since they transfer all the impact strenght to the jaw.

Some bacinet have a shape very similar to the arch shaped barbute (even if most samples have the typical pointed backward apex, while the barbute usually have the charateristic "crest"), but they are made to have an aventail permanently attached, the barbute doesnt.

Yes. There is a suspended liner, similar to that of WWII helmets.

No. The barbute derived from the bascinet, initially as arched barbute, then, as more protection was requested, the cheek pieces extended until covering almost all the face, but they were mostly "T shaped" barbute. The "Y shaped" kind, that more closely resembled the old Corinthian helmet, was quite rare.

Mind that a "bearded axe" ("ascia barbuta" in italian) is an axe with the cutting edge extending below, so a "elmo a barbuta" ("bearded helmet") can be, for extension, an helmet with the cheek pieces extending unusually forward and below (in respect to the previous bascinet).

and less field of view. However, there is not an "original" Corinthian helmet shape. The one shown is only one of many variations. This is a Corinthian helmet as well https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/schrijfsels/wp-content/uploads/legacy/8604/helmet.300x0-is.jpg
