  1. Actually they were a lot more able than modern day replica makers are. They didn't make the thickness consistent, but made the metal more thick where it was needed and more thin where the thickness was less important. Modern day reproductions with the same grade of protection are always heavier. It's the same with agricultural tools, (pitchforks, sickles...) handmade ones of two or three generations ago are a lot lighter in the hand than modern-day mass-made ones.
