Cabral first landed in Brazil in the Year 1500. Columbus landed in the Paria peninsula, Venezuela, in the year 1498, during his third voyage, and recognised that land as a continent, since the Orinoco river was too big to be sustained by an island.

@Robodog69 Or, simply, that priest, that's present only in the saga of the Greenlanders, didn't report anything to the Vatican. At the time of Leif, Norses were devoted Christians (and build churches in Greenland) but it was not like anything a Christian did was reported to the Vatican. Also, for anyone reading the saga without knowing the existence of America, Helluland, Markland and Vinland were only three islands west of Greenland.

If we wanted to be very precise he was NOT convinced of having landed in Japan, but on a group of islands east of Japan, because that's what his map said (he was still not at the longitude of Japan, and he knew it). He landed in the American continent in his third voyage, 1498, in the Paria peninsula, Venezuela, and recognised it to be a continent, because the Orinoco river, that he saw, was too big to be sustained by an island. He named it "Paria". Still in the map of Waldseemuller (1507) that's often said is the reason we call the continent "America", in reality "America" is the name given to south America and "Parias" is the name given to central and north America.

He was genoese. There are legal documents in Genoa about all of his family (marriages, legacy disputes, etc...). At the time him being Genoese had never been in question. Infact it's clearly stated by the English ambassador in one of his reports.

In 15th century Genoa being an Italian city, like Naples, Milan or Florence, was not in question.

@sebastiansilverfox6912 That's a common misconception. Nationalities didn't born with national states. The fact that there wasn't a "pan-italian" political entity doesnt' mean there wasn't an "italian" cultural-historical entity. Like the fact that there wasn't a "pan-German" political entity doesn't mean that there wasn't a "German" cultural-historical entity. Italians and Germans KNEW to be Italian and Germans. Two centuries before Columbus, Dante gave for granted the difference between Italy and the rest of the world. and so did Petrarca and Boccaccio in mid 14th century. Fiore de Liberi's student, the condottiero Galeazzo Gonzaga fought two duels Vs. the Marshall of France, the famous knight Jean Le Meingre, called Boucicaut, exactly for the honor of the Italians, and it was 1395. Genoa being an Italian city, in 15th century, was not in question. Columbus was Italian for his own standards. What italians identifiy themself for, are as italians from a certain city. Not "not Italians".

In Genoa there are several written documents about all of his family (marriages, legal disputes, etc.) At the time, him being Genoese was never in question (Ie the English ambassador stated it in one of his reports). A Genoese sailor of 15th century not speaking or writing a good "italian" was perfectly normal. Italian was a literary language back then.

@MRUHY In the State Archive of Genoa here is a document dated 31 Oct 1470, Where Cristoforo Colombo, son of Domenico Colombo declared to have born in Genoa and to be older than 19. In another document, dated 25 Aug. 1479, he declared to have born in Genoa, to be 27, to have lived more than a year in Lisbon and for brief time in Madeira. From another document, we know Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa lived in Genoa already in 1451. They transferred to Savona in 1470. His sons knew perfectly from where their family was. Infact his son went briefly to Genoa to solve a inheritance dispute with relatives. In late 15th/early 16th century, Italian was the literary language. It had been since the beginning/half of 14th century (Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio).
