  1. in weaponry, many things that had no real use any more had been left as an ornament for some time, first to be discarded (migration period ring hilt swords whit the ring no more functional, decorative welding pattern on the side of the blades, when the blade itself was already homogeneous steel...) because to some user a certain weapon had to look a certain way to seem appropriate. While all the round shield had a boss, because it was a part of the protection, kite shields could have it or not, and the boss was completely discarded in later evolutions.

  2. In Italy (indifferently from the Alps to Sicily) until early 20th century, the cloak was still way more diffused than the coat. For that it was still part of WWI uniform of the Italian army.
