Bad treatment of slaves was frowned upon (see the case of Cato the Elder), while good treatment was usually appreciated (see Letter 47 of Seneca). One of the thing the clip forgot to mention is that Roman slaves had right to property. Their personal properties were not of the master. A master could sell the work of his slave but, if in his "free time", out of that service, the slave managed to earn something that was his own. Some slave became very wealthy that way. There were even slaves owning slaves.
