It's forbidden to ask for a port for the people you rescued, receive one, and THEN keeping on performing other rescues instead of carrying them there. If you have the capacity to perform multiple rescues, then don't ask for a port until you are at full capacity. If you ask for a safe port, it's implied you are in an emergency situation, not that you can keep on strolling around in open sea doing other things. If you can, you should avoid uselessly stressing a country's emergengy facilities. If you want to stick to international law, then the vast majorities of those people should be disembarked in Tunisia, or Malta, that are almost always the closest safe ports. If you choose to ask Italy for a safe port (that Italy has no obligation to give. None is required to give a third option by international law) then you should thank and follow the rules.
