+Worthy101 It's often referred as the "Alpini Rucksack", as to give him more dignity, but really it had been the standard tactical rucksack of the entire Italian Army (Alpini included) until the late 80's. Like for other military backpacks of the time, it was destined to carry the need for the survival of the soldier on the field for three days. The central compartment, in origin, was for the K-rations, while the blanket was originally intended to be carried over the rucksack, tightened by it's cover (that infact has long straps for that reason) and not under it.

The tactical backpack was intended to be standard issue for a mass army. As other tactical backpacks of the '70s-'80s, this one was intended to carry what the soldier needed for three days on the field. The central compartment was for three days of K rations. Being impermealised, it duplicated as an emergency bucket. The lateral compartments were for water, ammos and other items. The overlong top flap was to tighten the rolled up wool blanket. The slotted central belt, for the entrenchment tool. The lower straps were the right lenght for the half tent. The central, short, one, to secure the backpack to the belt. all the backpacks contained the same basic items. To lose the backpack was like to lose the rifle. Like the rifle, if you were in a situation where you could lose a backpack, you were in a situation where you could replace it by taking one of a dead man.
