@martijn9568 They are pretty much entirely open for scholars.

Marco Polo is from Venice. There is some possibility his family originated from dalmatia, but already Marco's grandad resided in Venice.

Yeah, there had been several raids in eastern Europe for over a century, but not an organised attack like the first one.
3
To inspire Marco had been his father (and his uncle) that traveled to China for trade. It only happened that China, at the time, had been conquered by the Mongols.

The Rus of Kiev had existed for almost four centuries at that point.

No. During the first mongol invasion of Europe it was noted that the European knights tended to win small-scale engagements, but to lose large battles. What the Mongols had was a command system capable to cohordinate tens of thousands of riders in battle, while the European commanders still led from the front, so they could not even see what happened at more than few meter distance.

Yeah. I miss to travel by horse, and die of appendicitis

Not very successful tough, since the Mongols invaded both in the end.

This is not "in total", but in two years. The guy was a traveling diplomat even before, if you count all the travels Battuta made in his life (that only seldomly left the Muslim world) you should count Giovanni's total too. This without counting all the travel accounts that Battuta simply copied.

@Valerio_the_wandering_sprite It's not that, if Wikipedia says the Kievan Rus ceased to exist in 1240, then all the people there, exactly in 1240, "Ok, we are not Russian any more, we must call ourself another way from now. Let's try Novogorodian, or Ruthenian. It sounds good." Those are just conventions. The people there, only six years later, were exactly as Russian as before.

@nemiw4429 I'm sure you can find the account of the first Mongol invasion of Europe.

It seems papacy outlived khanate in the end.
