Sorry, for 6 months the Russians smashed their heads on Bakhmut, not Soledar. Soledar was only one of MANY villages on the frontline, not particularly interested by attacks. THEN, since it was evident they would have never taken Bakhmut, to have a success to show to the public, the Russians attacked Soledar in force, like taking a village without major roads and with a water obstacle west of it has some great strategic relevance.

  125. Russian communicates are bogus, but the drones exploding on the ground in particular is not an evidence of not having been intercepted. The splinters of a proximity fuse shell or missile rarely ignite the explosive charge on the drone (TNT is very stable). They mostly damages the drone engine and controls, rip off wings etc. Secondary explosions, or explosions too big to be justified by the drone fuel (mostly depleted at that point) and charge are a sign that the actual target had been hit.

  215. Crimea has several southern/eastern ports (IE Feodosyia) that can be used to resupply it. By ship you can transport huge quantities of anything (huge WWII armies had been entirely supplied by ship) If the Ukrainians are not able to enforce a real naval blockade around it (and they aren't) the Russians are not going to leave it without a fight.

I don't know if you've been paying attention, but ships don't need any refinery in Crimea to ferry from Crimea to the Russian ports on the east side of the Black sea. They can actually transport fuel TO Crimea. There are only 190km distance from Novorossiysk to Feodosiya. Any sizeable cargo ship can do that route back and forth several times before refueling. The Black Sea not being the Atlantic is actually an advantage if you have to transport goods, and your enemy doesn't have a fleet, or the domain of the air, to contest the shipping.

The farthest action the Ukrainian aviation did outside Ukrainian coast, so far, had been over Snake Island, so I wouldn't hold my breath for anti-air being destroyed over Crimea, or legions of drones wreaking havoc in the southern part of the peninsula. Pilots of NATO countries that bordered, or almost, the Warsaw Pact during the cold war tended to have different training, and used different tactics, than US ones. That often surprised US pilots in combined exercises. You simply can't get conclusions from a single incident whose causes are still to assess. It's not like US pilots never crashed an F-16.

But, if Ukrainians pilots still have that habit of "playing it safe", that's not dangerous for the aircrafts. Quite the contrary infact.

The F-16 B-Course takes 9 months, and that's for fresh pilots. For an experienced pilot, to transition from a western combat aircraft to an F-16 takes less than three months. For a pilot with experience flying a Mig 29 is something in between. F-16 instructors, last year, estimated around 6 months. So it doesn't seem the training had been truncated in anything.

Premised that, even considering 9 months, the Course would have ended in May for the first pilots, flight hours are a huge advantage and the reason it would take less than the full nine months required for the fresh pilots for the Ukrainians. There is little standardization between the cockpits of western aircrafts. Transitioning from a MIG-29 doesn't take significantly more time than from any other model.
