They are useful to not inhale radioactive isothopes, or to not have the skin contaminated by touching them, but cobalt-60 is a very hard ferromagnetic metal. It's only real danger are gamma rays and the only thing that protects from gamma rays is mass, and a lot of it. That said, a lead apron would have been better than nothing.
