Unfortunately, to reduce the thickness of leather by 11% IS going to affect it's integrity.

To produce many spores is an adaptation that requires energy, but has a purpose in nature. That to be more likely to reproduce, finding a suitable habitat. The pennicillum camemberti doesn't need this adaptation, because has no competition. It's directly poured into the habitat. So there's nothing to contrast the mutation to produce less spores, and save energy.

They are made with the cheapest leather and the least durable outsole, so obviously they are going to cost a lot. Who search for shoes that last, usually doesn't have that much to spend.

Check for surplus military boots. Most military boots of various armies made until 10-15 years ago (now common on the surplus market) are made of good leather with traditional stitched soles. They are comfortable and waterproof and, under the pants, seems like a normal pair of shoes. Those for example are Italian Army boots model 2004. https://www.ebay.it/itm/anfibi-militari-esercito-italiano-Mod-2004/124177860912?_trkparms=aid%3D1110001%26algo%3DSPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160323102634%26meid%3Da3cc2c78186a473499dc6c4058561a75%26pid%3D100623%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D383212672900%26itm%3D124177860912%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2047675&_trksid=p2047675.c100623.m-1

@saraandstuartshannon2160 Err... no. I wear leather shoes, but I know that, apart for the environmental problems of livestock breeding, Only the tanning process is going to inevitably be more environmentally damaging than producing the same amount of synthetic materials. As for "vegan" materials, there are MANY different kinds. IE "ecolorica" had been out since the '80s. it's as breathable and more durable than real leather (that's why it became a favourite for safety and high-end motorcycle boots), but it's quite expensive. Even more than the cheap leather used for the Dr. Martens.
