  3.  @basskick666  The VAT is applied on anything, not only on products that come form the US, so is not damaging specifically US sales, and it has been there forever, so it's inflaction neutral. This import tax is new, so it's going to rise prices in the US. How rising prices and reducing competition to favor inefficient manufacturers is going ot damage US economy? At the same time, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and the EU are not rising tariffs among them. How integrating more those economies among them, increasing their mutual exchanges, and less with the US, is going to damage US economy?

  4.  @basskick666  Uh, no. Americans will have 25% taxes on what they buy from Canada. Everyone, including Europeans, have 20% taxes on what they sell into EU, so VAT is neutral for every manufacturer, regardless where in the world he's located. Various US states have taxes on sales. It's not like EU exporters in the US are more influenced by them than US manufacturers. Tariffs and taxes on consumption are not the same thing, and have not the same effect. The tactic never worked. Trump already tried it the last time. EU never backed down in a tariff war. Their response is entirely bureocratic. There will be counter-tariffs for the same net sum. So US products are going to be more expensive in the EU. Those of other manufacturers worldwide will not. So Trump is doing a favour to US competitors, giving them a net advantage on the European market.

  5.  @basskick666  Europe doesn't add 20% to the price of American goods sold there, Europe add 20% to the price of ANY good sold there. US manufacturer are not damaged by it, since EU manufacturers pay exactly the same tax.

  6.  @basskick666  eu customers pay that tax on every product sold in the EU, it doesn't count where it had been manufactured. It doesn't favor EU manufactuers in respect to US ones.

An American doesn't pay that price on American nor on European products. so the presence of the tax in Europe doesn't favor anyone in Europe, and doesn't favor anyone in the US. You are not explaining a structural imbalance, you are not able to understand that taxes on consumption and tariffs are not the same thing and don't work the same way. Taxes on consumption are applied on any product, regardless where it had been made. Tariffs are applied only on products that come from an external country, making only them more expensive. I happen to have a degree in economics, but it doesn't need to have one to understand such a simple thing.
