That's exactly how viruses work. The natural selection in their case favour the milder strains, because those are the ones that have more time to infect new hosts, and so to spread more. A virus that kills rapidly (IE Ebola) will never have a widespread diffusion. The most successful human viruses are those, like the rhinovirus (the virus of common cold), that cause very mild symptoms, or none at all. That doesn't mean that the virus wasn't dangerous. It was VERY dangerous. Simply it's becoming less dangerous.
