A virus that kills rapidly (IE Ebola) will never have a widespread diffusion. The most successful human viruses are those, like the rhinovirus (the virus of common cold), that cause very mild symptoms, or none at all. That doesn't mean that the virus wasn't dangerous. It was VERY dangerous. Simply it's becoming less dangerous.
