Do you know one? Mind that a direct democracy (where an assembly of free men votes on any decision) is not a republic, where regular elections are called to elect representatives.

A tribe, like a chiefdom, can't be a a republic, because in those the State simply does not exist yet.

twiliblade Err... no. A republic is a form of government were the state is considered "public matter", separate from the monarch, but from the citizen's too. That separates it both from monarchies than from direct democracies (where the State is simply an assembly of citizens, not something separated from them). In other terms, the monarchy is like a sole proprietorship, direct democracy is like a partnership, republic is like a corporation.
