  8. An improvement over the flimsy, ill-conceived and unreliable M60, but too heavy for what it does. The PKM provides the same service weighting 3kg less and with the only downside of a slower barrel change. However there are love letters of the Ukrainians for the Rehinmetall MG3 and Beretta MG42/59, that have similar weight to the M240. I suspect the difference is the tripod. The Lafette tripod is a work of art.

  9. Many wildcat cartridges had been made by necking down .30 Carbine cases. That way you can easily obtain bi-sonic muzzle speed in a bullet that has better ballistic coefficient than that of the .30 Carbine, and so can really be considered an intermediate cartridge. The problem was that the only available rifles you could use those were converted surplus M1 Carbines.

  10.  @ScottKenny1978  Unfortunately the round was not really suited to be used in semiauto handguns (too long to be comfortable. Its' considerably longer than 10mm, and 1.5mm longer than 5.7X28mm, that's already a long cartridge for a pistol). Had they chosen at the start to give it the same base diameter of 9mm or 10mm (so still perfectly fine for double stack magazines) in exchange of a shorter overall lenght, we would have seen a lot more .30 Carbine chambered pistols, and so a lot more .30 Carbine chambered carbines, around. It would have been the 10mm Auto many years in advance.

  11. For the metric issue, It's not "Pylon". Any industrial design in 1985 was long made in metric. Not only in UK, but in the US too. To submit blueprints in imperial was incredibly backward. Especially coming from young engineers. For the rest, that's why you prefer to have firearm companies to built firearms. Because for the guys that work in firearms companies all those charateristics are their bread and butter. They doesn't need to be instructed on the importance of all those things.

  12. It's a short recoil breechlock. The locking block keeps the barrel and the bolt linked togheter during their rearward movement, until it rotates out of the way. It work exactly like a Browning 1917-1919, but the locking block rotates instead of falling.

As an offensive weapon, it was more awkward. The shield was soon ditched for the offensive role, so the weapon remained naked and without a stock, but it was A FIRST. There was nothing better around to clear trenches, so none really thought of improving it until 1918.

  24. It's a grenade sight, when lifted up, it also acts as gas-cutoff. The rifle could shoot Energa and Super-Energa grenades, the muzzle-brake/compensator is also a grenade launcher and a flash hider, hence the name "tri-compensator". The original sling acts as a secondary grenade sight when the butt of the rifle is on the ground, the number of studs over the ground is the range in hundreds of meters.

  26.  @hendriktonisson2915  Reloading was a backline activity. It was not supposed to be done in first line. If your WWII MG uses 200-250 round belts, that means you are going to change belt many times in action, and the assistant is going to keep that belt in hand all the time only to to reduce the frequency of jammings. We dont' use many WWII things, cloth belts, not disintegrating belts (like those of the FIAT M35)... It's not "belt good, strip bad". Belts had to EVOLVE to be good.

  27. Thus having adopted the P38, the Germans manufactured and issued much more Walther, Mauser and Sauer in .32 ACP during the war. For what was the use of a pistol on the field, a simple blowback was favoured over a complex breechlock. From this point of view, to adopta a blowback in .380 ACP from the start was probably the right decision.

  31. Elklund describes it as a piston action in his patent infact. Direct impingment doesn't exist. Both this, the direct derivate Rasheed and the MAS 49/56 are piston actions. That's also why the "gas tube" has the external diameter of a standard rifle gas piston (and way larger than the diameter of the internal gas pipe). Because in a piston action what moves the carrier is pressure for surface. A smaller piston, (thus with the same internal diameter of the gas pipe, and so the same pressure) wouldn't have had enough force to move the carrier.

  33. Actually the 6.5 carcano is absolutely great at penetrating anything softer than lead, so wood, sand, bushes... It doesn't penetrate steel light armors that are overmatched by .30 bullets, that's why the Italians switched to the 8mm Breda for medium machineguns.

  42. An MG34 bolt is composed of 28 finely machined parts. A BAR bolt is composed of 18 parts. A Breda 30 bolt is composed of... 4 parts, recoil spring included. In the receiver practically only the H block and the locking piece (so two separate parts) required precision machining. It actually was a pretty easy MG to manufacture.

Actually there was a very handy manual in English, printed by the Brits to instruct the machinegunners to reuse captured ones ( https://www.forgottenweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/Breda%2030/Breda%20Model%2030%20manual.pdf ). None of the cited "problems" is indicated as an issue at all. The US intelligence even deemed the Breda to be "superior to the BREN in dusty conditions" ( Tactical and Technical Trends, the magazine of US intelligence, No. 7, Sept. 10, 1942. "use of captured Italian weapons").

  45. Actually this is a simple action even by modern standards. In WWI, only the Hotchkiss was simpler than this. For a water cooled MG, open or closed bolt is indifferent. The Browning 1917-1919 too fired from a closed bolt.

  47. 1) The MAB PA-15 is not a breechlock design like the Steyr, or the Beretta, but a delayed blowback design. The barrel is not locked to the slide, but it's only due to rotate during it's rearward motion, so adding a little mechanical disadvantage to the simple blowback operation. It's quite a clever design actually. 2) In every pistol design there is a twist imparted by the projectile to the weapon, when the projectile engages with the rifling and starts to rotate. In a rotating barrel design this effect is actually reduced exactly because the barrel rotates in respect to the frame, so it partially absorbs the projectile's torque.

The correct reloading procedure for a right handed person seems to be: hold the gun with your left hand by the safety / magazine holder and use your right hand to replace the magazine and operate the charging handle (that's almost exactly the same procedure of the Bergmann MP35 reviewed last week) and you'll not have loss in combat efficiency at all. Is not like you have much to do with your right hand (that's rupposed to be your most able one) until the reload procedure is completed, so it's better to use it to reload the gun.

  50. Not really. It doesn't exist a real GPMG. The FN MAG, like this, is a fixed position MG. It has the volume of fire, but not the mobility. The PKM is a LMG. It has the mobility, but not the volume of fire.
