When a army adopts a version of something, it's practically bound to use THAT version until it's replaced by something else, for the sake of interchangeability of parts. IE the last M9 Beretta manufactured for the US army were still the 1985 specs, despite the manufacturer having implemented several plug&play improvements in the civilian versions.

@genericpersonx333 Not only in US. In any army the LMG was always the weapon from which the fire started, and the one around wich the riflemen tended to group. The Brits recognised that before the war. They made sure that any man in the squad knew how to use and service the BREN and trained them so that if a single man in the squad survived, he should have used the BREN.

The bottom placement prevented to use a bigger magazine (it would have been an hindrance in firing from prone position) and drums are complicate, heavy and expensive for what they do.

Far too heavy to be a battle rifle.
