You can make MGs that are as, or more, reliable than the M2 browning, and weight substantially less.
BUT, for an HMG, weight is not really a factor (10kg more or less don't count, if the MG is to be mounted on a vehicle anyway), so substitution had never been really considered.
IE the Russians, instead, adopted the DShK (34 kg, slightly lighter than the M2) in 1938, replaced it with the NSV (25 kg) in 1971, and with the KORD in 1998.
