European factories ad yards use the same method to power tools that are too big for standard 220V. Obviously, using two 220V phases the result is further more powerful.

16A L plugs are the best. They are flat, so the socket occupies half the space than any "round" plug, both on the wall or in power strips. They are 16A rated, like the type E and F (schuko), they are grounded, and they are bi-directional. The Type L is the only plug that has all those charateristics. If there should be an unified standard, it should be the type L.

LOL! Good one. Actually, like all the "round" plugs (and that includes the type E and F plugs that French and Germans like so much, so Brits are not alone in their misery) is uselessly big. An E. @alexties6933 You can. The type L 10A plug (Italian standard) has 4 mm round pins, measuring 19 mm in length, the centres of the line and neutral pins are spaced 19 mm apart. The Type C plug (Europlug) has two 4 mm round pins, measuring 19 mm in length, spaced 18.6 mm apart at the base. In practice that 0.4 mm doesn't make any difference, and The 10 amp style socket accepts type C plugs. You can't insert type E or F plugs in type L sockets.

The Italian standard is "L". Italy use also "C" because the Europlug is fully compatible with "L" (is an "L" plug without the ground) and sometimes "F" because much manufacturers of electronic devices, especially Germans, use it.

@vapervop Because you can fit two L sockets in the space occupied by a single F socket ans L sockets and plugs cost less for the same service. The L standard is simply better.
