Actually Zelensky made HUGE mistakes at the start of the war. He didn't mobilize, despite the warnings of US and British intelligence, to not seem "aggressive". Had him at least prepared a defence, the south of the country would have been easily defended. There is a grand total of 7 roads linking Crimea to the continent. Five pass over bridges, and the other two are surrounded by marshes. It would have been easy to cut all of them, and keep Kherson, Mikolaiv, Mariupol and the Zaporizhzhia power plant in Ukrainian hands. Even failing to do so, Kherson is linked to the east of the Dnepr by 3 bridges. It only needed to cut them to not lose the city.
