We know that, in the Roman army, there were legionaries that were exempt from other duties, because they were good at doing something useful (accountants, engineers...). Likely, among them, there were barbers too. Instead of building roads, or foraging, they shaved the others. A single maniple (200 men) was enough to keep a barber's hands full all day long. It worked like that in WWI. Those that were barbers in civilian life, kept on shaving in the trenches.
