The Chartagenean betrayed Massinissa, that was fighting for them and earned them several victories, by siding with his enemy Syphax. They lost their numidian cavalry because, in the end, Syphax was not Massinissa, and had it annihilated, first with the burning of his camp at Utica, and then in the battle of the Great Plains.

1) The first historian to write about the battle had not been Livy, but Polybius, that wote about it when many direct witnesses were still alive, that's an almost idyllic situation as far as sources on ancient battles are considered. 2) because at Utica there had not really been a pitched battle, since the Romans simply burned the Numidian camp at night and slaughtered the Numidians trying to escape and the Carthagenean trying to help. Maybe there were elephants, maybe not. Surely the Carthageneans would have not led them into a fire. 3) actually there are no archaeological evidences of the vast majority of ancient battles, nor we know their exact location. Applying the very same logic, maybe Cannae never happened. 4) due to the dating of some wood? Yeah, we know that wood existed After Zama. Actually that simply gives credit to the Roman envoys to Carthage in 153, that reported they had seen quantities of wood stored for building a war fleet (we know that Carthagenean warships were prefabricated and could be assembled when needed).
