  2. 1) The first historian to write about the battle had not been Livy, but Polybius, that wote about it when many direct witnesses were still alive, that's an almost idyllic situation as far as sources on ancient battles are considered. 2) because at Utica there had not really been a pitched battle, since the Romans simply burned the Numidian camp at night and slaughtered the Numidians trying to escape and the Carthagenean trying to help.
