Pewter can be "poor man's silver", but it's rich man's silverware. Only rich people did eat in plates made of it. The plates of common people were made of wood or terracotta. Also, you can't really distinguish the eventual effects of eating tomatoes, since it would need years of continuous use to have some discernible effect.
