How dogs avoided being exterminated by cats? They run.

The pitbull has not even the strongest bite among dogs. Bone-crushing animals, like spotted hyenas, are in a different league.

Actually genetic analisys shows not only all of dogs derive form the wolf, but all of them derives from a specific variety of wolf, the holartic grey wolf, from which they separated only 40.000 years ago, while the Himalayan, Indian and Italian wolves belong to different haplogroups.

Actually the spread of dogs in the old world led to the extinction of almost all the dog-like hyenas, that occupied their same evolutive niches, while the bone-crushing hyenas, that occupied there the same evolutive niche of the bone-crushing dogs in America, survived. So there's still something very similar around.

@danielowens2913 Spotted hyenas are active hunters AND scavengers. Actually hyenas are the "dogs" of the old world. Similar due to convergent evolution (they occupied the same evolutionary nices). The diffusion of the dogs into Eurasia caused the extinction of almost all the "dog-like" hyenas, while the bone-crushing hyenas survived.
