  4. Previous flight portions are probably hypersonic ie boost phase before motor burn out, then drag will slow it down especially if it starts turning - otheriwse it`s going to break up. It is after all an Iksander.

  26. It did but with no secondaries they obvioulsy could not penetrate it with a conventional warhead but with a Nuke, maybe - depending on how deep it is. Also, there might not have been anything in that bunker. In any case this was a tech demonstration. As for a carrier, with GPS denied in wartime and no terminal guidance on the missile I doubt it. Strapdown INS is not enough.

  32. M J K I don’t listen to State run media I listen to the Russians who have fought on the ground with Iranian troops in Syria. Iranians are better than the inept and cowardly Syrians but are still not up to scratch.

  34. The US has confirmed it was a Kinzhal, but It would not have hit the floor at Mach 10 thats for sure.The motor would have long passed burn out stage so just Isaac Newton riding it in the terminal stage.

  35.  @ArcturanMegadonkey  It would likely hit high Mach in the launch phase, motor burn out, then fall ballistically.unpowered whilst still retaining the ability to make some very shallow modest turns but not too many because they want to actually hit the target. I dont believe the missile with a conventional warhead would be able to pen a deep bunker - no way. Sooooo, its a political statement more than anything. Put a Nuke on the tip its a different ball of wax.

  37.  @itsve8632  There is no way a conventional warhead would be able to penetrate a deep bunker. The Kinzhal is not a penetrating weapon it`s an Iksander missile. If it had a Nuke in the warhead section then yes - maybe depending on how deep the bunker is. Important Soviet deep bunkers were targeted with a dozen or more Nukes EACH back in my Cold War days.

  38.  @itsve8632  When they call this a hypersonic missile it is important to understand it doesnt carry the same velocity in every portion of its flight profile. It does not hit the ground at Mach 10 for example, it likely attains that speed in the launch / boost phase and sheds speed thereafter especially if it starts doing shallow turns. Drag will ensure it.

There are lot of things going on here that bear further analysis and are not obvious when considering it at face value. Let me try to explain better. The Russians say the weapon is capable of BMD avoidance using an aero ballistic profile - we don’t know of they decided to use this feature or not. It likely did not dispense decoys - if it has that capability - why give away all of your secrets in a low priority attack? We haven’t been told what velocity it hit the target at so we are making assumptions. We saw a surface explosion which likely means no penetration. The kinzhal is a small weapon so doesn’t have the throw weight to carry a large conventional warhead. It is an accurate weapon but not surprising if we asume there was no manoeuvring of the weapon - GPS guidance which was likely not denied in the area would help it achieve that. If using no GPS it’s better still. I’m not dissing Russian capability but at the end of the day they attacked a relatively easy target to hit. The most capital they get out of this is political.
