Iksanders are also hypersonic and in any case, Kinzhal is an Iksander.

Previous flight portions are probably hypersonic ie boost phase before motor burn out, then drag will slow it down especially if it starts turning - otheriwse it`s going to break up. It is after all an Iksander.
2
If it was deep - this Kinzhal would not penetrate it either. Hence zero secondaries.
2
@michaelmccoy5821 US has already confirmed the target area and the use of Kinzhal.
2
@knowledge3563 If that was a deep bunker theres no way that missile would be able to penetrate it. Its an Iksander missile not a robust earth penetrator. This was simply a political statement.
1
@skytrailwarrior8326 Now hearing it was a warehouse rather than a bunker, and with zero secondaries, probably an empty warehouse.
1
@skytrailwarrior8326 The Russian MoD. 😀

It did but with no secondaries they obvioulsy could not penetrate it with a conventional warhead but with a Nuke, maybe - depending on how deep it is. Also, there might not have been anything in that bunker. In any case this was a tech demonstration. As for a carrier, with GPS denied in wartime and no terminal guidance on the missile I doubt it. Strapdown INS is not enough.

The US has confirmed it was a Kinzhal, but It would not have hit the floor at Mach 10 thats for sure.The motor would have long passed burn out stage so just Isaac Newton riding it in the terminal stage.
1
@ArcturanMegadonkey It would likely hit high Mach in the launch phase, motor burn out, then fall ballistically.unpowered whilst still retaining the ability to make some very shallow modest turns but not too many because they want to actually hit the target. I dont believe the missile with a conventional warhead would be able to pen a deep bunker - no way. Sooooo, its a political statement more than anything. Put a Nuke on the tip its a different ball of wax.
1
Yeah where are the secondary explosions? This was either a miss or that bunker was empty. I hope it was a decoy.
1
@itsve8632 There is no way a conventional warhead would be able to penetrate a deep bunker. The Kinzhal is not a penetrating weapon it`s an Iksander missile. If it had a Nuke in the warhead section then yes - maybe depending on how deep the bunker is. Important Soviet deep bunkers were targeted with a dozen or more Nukes EACH back in my Cold War days.
1
@itsve8632 When they call this a hypersonic missile it is important to understand it doesnt carry the same velocity in every portion of its flight profile. It does not hit the ground at Mach 10 for example, it likely attains that speed in the launch / boost phase and sheds speed thereafter especially if it starts doing shallow turns. Drag will ensure it.
1
@itsve8632 You can see the missile hit the ground at 30fps so it isnt hitting at a particularly high velocity.
1
@itsve8632 err no that was an explosion created by a warhead.
1
@tylerdurden3722 They have fired 1000 Iksander Ms. They are all hypersonic.
1
@iliaslive7006 Well I dont think they store them all in one depot. Because of tactical requirements I suspect they arent stored at all and are delivered up the chain immediately.
1
@iliaslive7006 And you certainly dont store everything in one location. Especially if you already know the other side is aware of the structure, Russia built it in soviet days.
1
@iliaslive7006 We really do not know what was in there, if I were the Ukrainians, I would have emptied every single one the Russians knew the location of days before the invasion.
1
@iliaslive7006 well that’s a nice little story they told…
1
@iliaslive7006 they can say it was full of gold bars - the point I’m making is they can say anything they like. As long as the Russians swallow it. I saw no secondaries so I’m saying it wasn’t full of ordnance. Or, zero loss due to no penetration or a miss.
1
@iliaslive7006 nope, what I’m saying is this was a political statement and a technology demonstration. There are lot of things going on here that bear further analysis and are not obvious when considering it at face value. Let me try to explain better. The Russians say the weapon is capable of BMD avoidance using an aero ballistic profile - we don’t know of they decided to use this feature or not. It likely did not dispense decoys - if it has that capability - why give away all of your secrets in a low priority attack? We haven’t been told what velocity it hit the target at so we are making assumptions. We saw a surface explosion which likely means no penetration. The kinzhal is a small weapon so doesn’t have the throw weight to carry a large conventional warhead. It is an accurate weapon but not surprising if we asume there was no manoeuvring of the weapon - GPS guidance which was likely not denied in the area would help it achieve that. If using no GPS it’s better still. I’m not dissing Russian capability but at the end of the day they attacked a relatively easy target to hit. The most capital they get out of this is political. Nice talking to you too.
1
@williamdavidcraigjr7841 Its bases.
1
@inspectorclouseau6859 Nope.
1
@icebaby6714 I will tell you now, that missile will not be able to pull fancy turns nor can it avoid radar or Infrared thats why the US was able to track the launch and hit.
1
@themidlayer I call BS no secondary explosions means no weapons bunker hit or an empty bunker.
1
@puppetmaster579 And if it is based on the Iksander M, I see no extra control surfaces I suspect it does not manoeuvre much at all. It likely spits out decoys, now is the time to collect the debris and take a look at it.
