  3. USN SM-3 Block IIA - Mach 17 "coughs." Earlier SM-3 Blocks Mach 10. Even Patriots a were mach 5 missiles 20 years ago.

  6.  Brendan O' Neil  They wont be moving at that speed and manouvering, turning circles would be thousands of miles in size and the weapons would be fried then break up, let alone hit anything. In the terminal phase they will be moving a LOT slower thus vulnerable to intercept.

  9. They have test beds and prototypes that missed the target by 25 miles. They can keep them.

  10.  @JKMT  Not really, these glide vehicles cannot carry large warheads. The shielding required would be heavy and substantial more than likely, as well as manouvering devices.That reduces throw weight.

  11. Yes, but pretty much everybody has hypersonic missiles, ie a lot of missiles already travel much faster than Mach 5, USN SM-3 block Block IIA for example is a Mach 17 missile. Even old Patriots are Mach 5 weapons. That Chinese drone launched a missile, separating at those speeds was impressive but I dont see the tactical utility, an SLBM does the same job and does it faster launched on a flat trajectory. Plus hideously expensive.

  12. Anything more than Mach 5 is classed at hypersonic, the US has lots of missiles that have speeds in excess of Mach 5. The old Patriot is a Mach 5 missile, THAAD is a Mach 8 missile, SM-3 is a Mach 17 missile etc etc.

  13. Both relatively useless strategically since they are prototypes that cant hit the test targets. I dont think America has anything to fear.
