@SwordQuake2 33 engines with consistent reliability - until the booster attempted to reorient is pretty impressive. Even then we really don’t know what was supposed to happen regarding actual shutdown order versus scheduling. Do we know how the FTS system works on the booster? Where are the pyrotechnics for example.

If Scott is correct it proves once again that gravity and inertia is king.

It's not just Russia, the CTBT people have gotten detector hits as far away as Israel. Basically Putin has just irradiated the whole of Eurasia. Low level or not, I find it hugely ironic the dumb son of a bitch just nuked himself.

Most likely some sort of experimental fuel. They are nuts to think it could be fully contained after a flight total loss. They are also nuts testing this in western Russia, what the fuck were they thinking.
1
Thats a good call actually, i was thinking the same thing, it could be a warhead casing cracked but didnt disintegrate to me, it would explain the short duration radiation event. It is of course possible they have developed an exotic fuel with an isotope constituent, with elements that have a very short half life.
1
It`s possible they actually flew a live tactical warhead pit in that missile minus the firing circuits. Why they would do that in western Russia rather than on the far east test ranges is beyond me, unless they didnt want to spend money on transferring the Naval test logistics. I dont think the Russians are dumb enough to develop a nulcear powered cruise missile.
1
We don't know what happened, but you can be sure as shit NATO and the US will know already, since we monitor and take air samples. The Russians have screwed up big time here, it's like Defence Intelligence Agency Christmas and for Sandia Lab too. That air sampling will pretty much reveal everything about what the Russians have been up to, what they've been using and even what they had hoped for and expected to do. Silly wabbits.

I suspect its some sort of exotic radioactive fuel.

I am worried they might have to add some extra equipment to get over the issues they have with engine relights which of course adds mass and reduces payload. Unless there are changes they can make without having to do that. Nobody has ever tried to recover a booster in this manner it looks very technically demanding. Maintaining fuel flow and pressure under immense forces is challenging when the vehicle is turning.
1
I doubt that, the Russians arent dumb enough to build a nuclear powered cruise missile. If one of those missiles misfires out of its lancher you could kill your own people when it breaks up, that`s a site or launch unit kill. I think it`s far simpler than that. I am thinking they had a live but small tactical Nuke Pit on that missile and it broke up on impact.
1
I doubt it, or it would be a closed cycle type if anything, and more likely to be Pu from a thermal battery of the type they use in satellites. Knowing the Russians it could also have easily been a very small tactical warhead pit. They have always been very reckless.
1
@sideshowbob1544 There is speculation the missile is subsonic, so how much thrust do you need? Especially if it was say, a lifting body. Also, it could be a dual propulsion type, but i`m speculating. I still think it was a thermal battery, why they chose to test this weapon so close to a population centre is beyond me, they have plenty of room in their far east ranges.

The contamination was too localised for that to be the case.
1
That was almost 20 years ago, I guess you havent seem the NSAMS units in DC.....
1
@luigeribeiro It was only the second ever flight. That demonstrates a great capability.
1
@ericstyles3724 Whatever system they had to maintain fuel flow may have worked, it could have been a different issue that caused some engines not to relight.Who knows.
1
@virt1one I think it can be called a partially successful spectacular failure.
1
We really don`t know what type of system the Russians have built.Try to remove SLAM from our thinking, the Russians have some brilliant engineers it`s a pity their factory quality control sucks ass.
1
@RvVx7 Yeah it is the Musk ego that is doing that.
1
Scott what can you tell us about the booster FTS system? Where are the pyrotechnics positioned and how does it destroy the vehicle. Great video by the way it’s a pleasure to subscribe.
