Your narrative is still horrific - it is those who believe in the free market and data democratization vs corrupt oligarchs who eliminated price discovery and rigged markets via dark pools (payment for order flow that allows you to execute order flow in a way that benefits short hedge fund subsidaries of the market maker), failure to delivers (naked shorting data is found by just googling sec failure to deliver - there are billions of shares of AMC oustanding sold to retail that the firm never issued), corrupt media platforms that peddle the lies of corrupt actors, and historic collusion between corrupt oligarchs and the DTCC / SEC. Thankfully Chair Gensler understands the risk posed by the current lack of transparency in the market; understands the risk to price discovery and is acting accordingly.
