I think the film would have been better if Killmonger leaned in more to the slave trade discussion - what if Wakanda worked and built their wealth as a wholesaler in the human trafficking industry: Arab and Transatlantic slave trade (like an amalgamation of the: Mali, Akan, Kongo, Bornu, and the north African wholesale slavers like Banu, Hafsids, Marinids) and that was his main driver, pure revenge. His leap into i want to have an empire at the end was heavy handed and kind of silly.
