If the Ukrainian elements who were engaging with them pushed forward into Russia they could reek havoc on Russian assembly areas and infrastructure - setting conditions for pursuit and logistical cannibalization of Russian stock as they go. Imagine what would happen if the Russian assembly areas were raided and their eastern forces suffered a rear attack? Total chaos, maybe even a collpase.
