That's because the batteries in electric cars are lithium , and those batteries are directly effected by the cold .

@leerman22 The lithium batteries used in those cars , are effected by the cold . That's why the have a heater for the winter , and coolant is used to keep them cool in the summer .
1
@frotobaggins7169 The battery weights about 800 pounds , and costs thousands to replace and hundreds to recycle . If the lithium used in the battery is exposed to oxygen said battery goes up in flames .
1
What people don't talk about is the life of the battery in a electric car , the lithium batteries can only be charged and discharged so many times before the batteries need to be replaced . Then one has to look at the cost of a new battery pack , then the company changing the battery has to look at the cost of sending the bad lithium battery pack to the proper recycling company . Where I work it's costs my company over 6,000 dollars to recycle 2,000 pounds of mixed batteries " nice, nimh, lithium an alkaline "
1
@LightAndShaddow5 It's all about charge and recharge cycles for the lithium batteries, the more you recharge it or keep it plugged into the charger it reduces it life .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 what about him ? I don't support him
1
@LightAndShaddow5 look all I know about is batteries , I could care less about Biden . Plus I don't know how the life cycle of a electric car
1
@LightAndShaddow5 The recycling of the used batteries will be very expensive , a new battery for a toyota prius is 4700 dollars with a core charge of 800 . Every type of battery have a life cycle , lithium is effected by the cold and heat just the act of charging a lithium battery that size creates heat and said heat reduces it's life .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 None of that matters when it comes time to replace the batteries and properly recycle them , and yes the cost of recycling is on the consumer . The recycler where I work would charge , 3500 to 6200 per electric car battery to recycle it because they contain lithium
1
@LightAndShaddow5 just wait and see , those who support electric cars arnt ready to see reality yet . Then I can say " I told you so "
1
@LightAndShaddow5 It's the end result when these batteries need to be replaced , which customers or the manufacturer hasn't though about yet . It will be an awaking when it gets to that point
1
@LightAndShaddow5 Because that's the last thing people think about in the long run , hell it costs money to properly recycle old light bulbs .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 We will see in the end , I do know a local chevy dealership where I live has 3 pallets of old volt lithium batteries that they have been trying to recycle for over a year now . The only type of battery that any recycling can make money on are lead acid batteries , since they can recover is the lead and resell it . All recyclers charge per pound , then there is the labor charge of sorting the batteries plus the charge if batteries are dameged as well .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 Electric cars are in my opinion moving small bombs , if one gets in accident and the battery pack is punctured and air hits the lithium dam a huge fire ball will result .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 Yes that happens as well , yet lithium is more dangerous then gas .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 More power to tesla etc , I hope they are successful . I'm still not convinced electric cars are the end all greatest thing ever built . I guess one has to experience a cell phone battery exploding in thier face , to understand how dangerous lithium batteries really are .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 So where's the proof that tesla is developing new recycling technology ? The can say what they want as long as it makes them sales
1
@LightAndShaddow5 Instead of saying that where's the proof that tesla is developing new recycling technology for thier batteries , a local lithium battery recycler in my city caught fire and burned for a week before it was safe for the fd to put it out .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 Look all I'm saying is that people don't know , how dangerous lithium batteries can be .
1
@LightAndShaddow5 So where is this building they are building ? Like I said have a lithium cell phone battery explode in your face , until you experience that you will never know how dangerous lithium batteries really are . I don't trust or think electric cars are the greatest thing ever built , nor will they be the solution . Have a good life
1
@LightAndShaddow5 It happens at times when changing a battery in a cell , it happens more often when the battery is swollen due to over charging. Again when you experience it your self , you will think differently . Again I don't trust electric cars and don't think they are the greatest thing ever , I don't believe some radical new type of recycling center will be built any time soon either .
