Well, they say that belittling or joking around too much in a hostage situation can get people killed. If the (psychotic/delusional/aggressive) bomb-threathen-er is feeling rejected, ridiculed or belittled, he might shoot someone to seem more intimidating. Like a lion charging at a group and someone stepping closer and taking a last selfie.

Yes but distracting him can go massively wrong if you aren't skilled at that. If you go; 'Eyo, thanks bud!' and touch his shoulder or you go; 'Ahahaha, shall I call you the 'weirdo on the plane"? then you might have a situation in which he wants to display his frustration/anger/power and will maybe harm someone to show he shouldn't be ridiculed.

@MWakefield82 A psychotic guy can take a 'can I take a picture' as a belittling comment, just as much as they can take a 'oh what a lovely vest' as a sarcastic comment or a sudden scream as a reason to create an explosion. The thing they (officials) want you to do is to stay calm and give the man what he asks for. Not to take selfies or otherwise taunt faith.
