  1. For future reference; 1. wet cloth in front of your mouth prevents inhaling too much smoke (I understand there was no time, I'm not blaming these men for being "ignorant' or something) 2. If a horse runs off, most of them will follow. These men used that principle the right way. One goes, the others go too. If a group stands still, lead one away with a blindfold on, they will follow.

  2. The trick (if you have tons of time, ofcourse) is to unleash all of the horses and guide one into the right direction. Some people even blindfold the first horse, to be able to guide it without it struggling when it sees the fire. Obviously that's only possible when there is a lot of time and more people.
