She could hear it again in hear head. And also just a 'brace' response to overstimulation.
I think the mother might have autism too (not that it matters..) but when you get overstimulated, you can respond to that by cowering, covering your ears, closing your eyes, youknow....like you would when you're overwhelmed or fearful.
Over stimulation happens when there are too many emotions, noises, touches, smells, flavours or colours/movements around you and you just want to flee from it.
In this case, it was replaying in her mind, there was no escape from it, so she broke down in tears.
There are overstimulation-video's online to simulate what it feels like.
