I once received a red cape from someone, made from velvet with a quality slightly higher than most Halloween-costumes, with feathers around.
It smelled a bit strange, almost like old butter, but I didn't really think any of it.
She then told me; 'Oh, right...just so you know, better wash it first. I wore it on Halloween during a basketball-match and the guy behind me vomited his beer on it."
I said; 'Oh...' and she said; 'Yeah, I took it home and put it in a bag, because it stank so bad. I left it in the bottom of my closet for a year or so, found it last week..."
I said; 'I understand" and she waved me goodbye. I'm cheap and I love handouts and I decided not to avoid this challenge.
My cleaningproduct of choice was "Ossengalzeep", basically Oxengallsoap. And a bit of Biotex.
I scrubbed it once, washed it out. Smell was unbearable. Scrubbed it again, became a bit less. Washed it another time, this time with really hot water. By this time, the feathers 'round the side were disgusting, pink and wet.
Then, I put it in the washingmachine. The loose tiny bits of feather were everywhere and I spend ages picking them off the fabric.
I then scrubbed it again, again, again, until the total was 7 times. Then I started picking the feathers off and let it dry.
And believe it or not.... you can still smell it a bit when you press your nose into the cape. But nobody does that, so hurray. A free cape.
(Yes, I know it's not as impressive as the lace-story with the grandma. What can I say, mine collects nothing.)
