Sure they are. But that doesn't mean it's healthy. Just like the girl that drank nailpolish. That was interesting too, her character behind the nailpolish. And sure, there was a "good" reason for it, eventually it came from troubles in the past.
Which is still no reason to claim that it's real artistic or real cool of her to drink nailpolish.
Now this example might be a bit extreme, but not being able to walk to the phone, not using a mouthcover while working with tiny splinters of plastic hair flying around, not dusting or cleaning, not having a working home, is downright unhealthy as well. And no matter how 'artistic' it may seem, praising his uncleanliness and saying that plenty of artist seem to work in chaotic dirty homes, is just not right.

So, msmeg, what you're saying is that if someone wants to do something that hurts their body, gives them terrible illnesses with possible fatal results, we have to respect that?
So if my niece decides she wants to drink nailpolish too, because it makes her feel good..or my brother likes to suffocate himself because it makes him feel high and happy. We should just condone that, because it makes him feel good?
Where this guy could EASILY get a mask from the dollarstore, maybe even 12 in a pack, we should just stand there and watch him? "Because we can't tell others how they can and can't live?"
Fine, I'll 'leave him alone" as you asked for. I won't bother spreading advice on this video anymore. Promise. The conversation is done.
But msmeg, let me make one thing clear.
If I were to take yóur advice and leave everyone alone who's life I don't approve of....my neighbour would be dead within the week. And my best friend would be too. They appreciate my urgent advice on their lifestyles and they acknowlegde that what they're doing to make themselves feel better is absolute rubbish and it should change. You can't change what you don't acknowlegde.
Have a nice day.
